III Renewable Gas Exhibition

Spain accelerates the start-up of biomethane plants with 200 projects

Our country currently has eleven operational biomethane plants that produce 455 GWh/year (one in Madrid, six in Catalonia, two in Castilla y León and two in Galicia), about 250 biogas plants with a total production of 8.079 GWh /year and seven solid biomass gasification plants in operation (one in Galicia, one in Aragón, one in Murcia, one in Castilla y León, one in Andalusia and two in Castilla-La Mancha) plus two pilot plants - also gasification -, in León and Navarra. It is information collected with Concha Raso to elconomista.es

Flurry of projects at the Renewable Gas Show in Valladolid

According to sector estimates, in Spain there are about 200 projects in different stages of development, managed by an increasing number of companies, which are betting on renewable gases, a business niche that could reach cruising speed once they are surpassed. the administrative, regulatory, economic and fiscal barriers that are limiting investment in new biomethane production infrastructure, reducing its penetration in the gas sector:

nortegas is already working on the Granja Conchita livestock farm project (Valladolid) to produce 20 GWh/year of biomethane, a plant in Gálvez (Toledo), has promoted the development of a plant in Ólvega (Soria) and another in Valencia de Don Juan .

Naturgy announced the construction in Utrera (Seville) of its sixth biomethane production plant in Spain and the first in Andalusia. In total, the company is managing more than 60 biomethane projects. One of these initiatives is that of Naturgy and Reganosa, together with Repsol, which will soon develop ten biomethane plants in Galicia with a capacity of 600 GWh/year.

nedgia, the gas distributor of the Naturgy Group, now has six biomethane plants in operation injecting into its network infrastructure and has an additional portfolio of more than 200 projects in different phases of development.

Nippon Gases, which together with Suma Capital in the joint venture Soluciones Totales de Biomethane (STB) is promoting the development of upgrading projects in Spain and already has two projects in Aragón and Cuenca.

Waga Energy which has recently launched the Can Mata biomethane production unit, operated by PreZero to produce 70 GWh of biomethane per year.

Biovic is launching the Galivi project in Lorca (Murcia), which will inject up to 30 GWh of biomethane per year and the Granollers plant, promoted by the Bionergía Vallés Oriental project (BioVO), which will produce 22 GWh of biomethane annually. Also the Montes de Toledo biomethane plant, which will produce 40 GWh of biomethane annually.

Ence Biogas It has a portfolio of 15 biomethane plants under development in Andalusia, Aragon, Catalonia, Navarra, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia and the Basque Country, with the aim of developing 20 biogas plants in the next five years.

Enagás Renewable and Genia Bioenergy They work together on a platform to promote the development until 2030 of at least ten plants with the capacity to produce up to 1 TWh of biomethane per year.

Other firms like Verdalia Bioenergy, society of Goldman Sachs, already has a portfolio of five projects purchased from Aurea Green Gas. Cepsa, for its part, has reached a recent agreement with Kira Ventures for the development of up to 15 biomethane plants. AND redexis, has acquired a plant in Almazán (Soria), where it will generate close to 20 GWh/year of biomethane, and is already working together with inerco to promote the development of ten more plants.
