Enagás Renovable, Genia Bioenergy and Grupo Valora promote a biomethane generation plant powered by alperujo and manure in Jaén
The project, which contributes to promoting decarbonisation and the circular economy, has been presented to the Territorial Delegation for Sustainable Development of the Junta de Andalucía in Jaén.
This installation would also allow the production of some 80,000 tons of organic fertilizers and would mean savings in CO2 emissions of approximately 120,000 tons per year.
Enagás Renovable ─subsidiary of Enagás─, the energy engineering company Genia Global Energy, and the Grupo Valora waste management company, have developed a project to promote the creation of a 60GWh biomethane production plant in Jabalquinto (Jaén), which will be It will feed mainly on alperujo (the olive residue after obtaining the oil) and manure.
The initiative thus contributes to the promotion of decarbonisation and the circular economy, thanks to the recovery of waste. Specifically, the plant would involve the conversion into biogas of up to 140,000 tons of organic waste each year, including pig slurry, leftovers from the food industry, alperujos and process water, to convert them into biomethane equivalent to around 60 GWh of Energy.
In addition, the circular economy processes of the plant would allow the generation of organic fertilizers and amendments ─materials of plant and animal origin─ aimed at improving the fertile capacity of crops and recovering degraded areas.
The project will mean the creation of more than 15 direct, permanent and qualified jobs, and will also allow the generation of an economic ecosystem that will benefit bio-waste producers (oil mills, pig farms and the agri-food industry), transporters and farmers.
The implementation of this initiative, which would mean a saving in CO2 emissions of approximately 120,000 tons per year, is in line with the Circular Economy Plan for Europe ─EU Directive 2018/850─ on the management, treatment and recovery of waste for municipalities, the Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition of the Government of Spain, the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) 2021-2030 and the Energy Strategy of Andalusia 2030.
This project joins the plan of Enagás Renovable, Genia Bioenergy and Grupo Valora to develop three additional projects in Andalusia, which would allow biomethane production to reach 200 GWh/year in total.
