Castro de Rei Biogas Plant

Enagás Renovable, Genia Bioenergy and Agroamb Prodalts join forces to build a biomethane production plant in Castro de Rei

The waste recovery company @Agroamb Prodalt, located in Castro de Rei, will promote, together with @Enagás Renovable and @Genia Bioenergy, the construction of a biogas and biomethane generation plant that will convert 155.000 tons of organic waste into 107 gigawatts of energy.

The Xunta de Galicia has declared this project a priority business initiative due to its potential contribution to the circular economy and decarbonization.

The project presentation event, which was held at the Agroamb facilities, was attended by the President of the Galician Government, Alfonso Rueda; the vice president and councilor of Economy, Industry and Innovation, Francisco Conde; and the mayor of Castro de Rei, Francisco Balado, among other authorities, as well as the representatives of the three firms promoting the project, Gabriel Butler CEO Genia Bioenergy, Antón Martínez CEO of Enagás, and Severiano Ónega, head of Agroamb.

The construction of this plant in Castro de Rei will involve an investment of around 20 million euros and the generation of 40 direct and indirect jobs will allow us to stop emitting 200.000 tons of CO² per year.

This new plant will be able to process around 155.000 tons of organic waste each year - at a rate of about 400 tons per day -, coming mainly from the agri-food industry and sludge from urban and industrial treatment plants. These will be converted into 107 gigawatts of energy in the form of biomethane, enough to supply the needs of 11% of the gas consumption of homes in the province of Lugo.

The three promoting companies assured that this initiative "marks a path as a benchmark in waste recovery and management plants" because it will allow decarbonization and fight against climate change, will help generate employment in rural areas and will mean having fuels of national origin.
