Soria will have the first biogas plant designed for direct injection into the grid

The Nortegas Group, through its subsidiary Nortegas Green Energy Solutions, together with Biovec, Bioenergetics of Navarra, the rest of the founding partners of Biolvegas and the company Oleofat, will launch the first national biogas plant for waste recovery designed for the direct injection of biomethane into the network, since, until now, Spain only had converted biogas plants.

The plant, currently under construction in the municipality of Ólvega (Soria), will come into operation in the last quarter of this year. The project will have the capacity to annually recover about 30.000 tons of pork manure and 35.000 tons of agri-food waste, industrial waste and residual oils.

In this plant a upgrading process that will purify the biogas generated by this waste, thus obtaining biomethane, equivalent to natural gas and 100% renewable. Through this process, up to 38 GWh per year of biomethane will be injected into the natural gas network, which is equivalent to the annual natural gas consumption of more than 8.100 homes. Additionally, and given that the injection of biomethane into the gas network will reduce the consumption of natural gas of fossil origin, the plant will contribute to the reduction of approximately 30.000 tons of CO2 emissions annually, providing an optimal solution to the management of this waste. in a circular economy context.

This will be the sixth biomethane plant built in Spain and the second by volume of biomethane production through waste recovery. The consortium that promotes the project combines the experience of the founding partners in the design, construction and operation of biodigestion plants, providing the capabilities of Oleofat in the management and treatment of oil waste and, in the case of nortegas, both its experience in the construction and operation of gas infrastructure and its strategic commitment to the development of biomethane in Spain.

The identification of a common interest in the environment of renewable gases and the circular economy has resulted in this project that involves an investment of around 6 million euros. The project will also contribute to the creation of 8 direct jobs and about 20 indirect jobs in its area of influence.
